‘Shakespeare Goes Bollywood’ To Be Brad Pitt’s Foray Into Bollywood?
It must have been kismet when Sam Sterling (CEO and Screenwriter - Jolliwood Entertainment) stumbled across the article: Brad Pitt: “I Would Love to Work in A Bollywood Film” (9/20/2012)
London (I-Newswire) January 8, 2013 - Sam had just commenced casting for Jolliwood’s new feature: Shakespeare Goes Bollywood. So he went ahead and began the start of a new era for Bollywood cinema, and adapted one of the characters specifically for Brad Pitt. “It's all so exhilarating who would have ever thought that one day leading Hollywood stars as Tom Cruise, Hugh Jackman, Brad Pitt, amongst others have reportedly expressed their eagerness to act in a Bollywood movie” Sam Sterling; “I have this vision: Brad, with other Hollywood, Bollywood and European stars, dancing with zeal to my original, hip-swerving Bollywood number” (....”If Happiness is what you're seeking...”) - which he has penned together with his other original songs. But this film is not just about songs and dance; it is an original, multi-layered captivating story with dramatic twists, and an ensemble of diverse international characters (American, British, South Asian, Russian and French) - in English.
This zany dramedy-musical follows a Bollywood 'icon', arriving in London and - against all odds - wangles the lead in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet at Stratford-Upon-Avon; adapting it to his unique Bollywood-esque style. But he also comes with a hidden agenda ...to move Shakespeare's home town to Bollywood - its ‘spiritual’ home. “After all, if Shakespeare was alive today, he would be writing for Bollywood” insists Sam Sterling. While some devout ‘traditional’ Shakespearean fans have been overwhelmed by the film’s concept, Bollywood fans have commented with glee “the sheer thought this film would have Shakespeare dancing in his grave”. Interestingly, the consensus from the broad cross-section of international film goers only question is “…when’s it out?”.
The film draws substance as well as inspiration from two very substantial sources: the Shakespearian canon and Indian mythology. It is not a superficially glitzy ‘Bollywood-makeover’ run-of-the-mill production of a tried and tested western narrative. It is not a fluffy little comedy of manners or merely an ironic observational comedy about “Asian Gurus” plonked in a western setting. What it is, however, is an original and theatrical farce which develops into a cinematic comedy of substance, juxtaposing centuries, cultures and values explains Sam who is also the producer.
Sam is currently inundated with cast and crew requests wanting to jump on board - referring to it as a “sizzling with fun” project and adding “the world could do with some respite from today's bleak economic prospects and looming gloom with an uplifting film such as this”.
As with all Holly/Bollywood endings, Sam Sterling expects the experience of pulling off such an adventurous project with an international star-cast will have a similar ending. He waits. Fingers crossed. In brace position and bated breath for ‘the replies’, as he scouts for awe-inspiring locations; diligently poring over the varied 'international cuisine' menu options - to be catered for, of course.

ABOUT SAM STERLING
Sam has produced and directed several short films which were well received at Cannes in 2007 and 2008. A recent trip to India yielded a number of documentaries exploring social oddities - very much off the beaten track.
His output as a writer consists of a number of feature length screenplays. One of them is Shakespeare Goes Bollywood - a cross-cultural comedy combining Shakespearian obsessions with Bollywood flamboyance. Another is Traffick-King - a rags-to-riches story with a back-to-rags conclusion set in West Africa, India and London; Baby Bébé - set in Cuba, USA and London - is a moving drama about a young boy looking to set 'normality' into his harrowing life, and Santa Claus-stein - is a comedy which throws a new light on Christmas.
