Sankalp Starts with 'The Cyclist' at Opening Night

Sankalp, the theatre society of MICA (Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad) started its new theatre season for 2013-14 by hosting the opening night on 13th august 2013 by staging an adaptation of Vijay Tendulkar's esteemed play The Cyclist.

This play is a carefully crafted voyage into the dark night of the soul. Using the commonplace naturalistic idiom in a lighter vein, it unravels the essence of a human journey: its aspirations, angst, brutality and ultimate meaning. Doing nothing is an option, but as the play's main character remarks "A journey is a journey, it has to be completed. Mine will not be affected by any lose or pain."

The Opening Night sought to introduce the first year students to Sankalp and give them a glimpse of the myriad activities that it organises all through the year. This year's Opening Night witnessed stellar performances that left the audience spell-bound. Professor Subash Tendle, Professor at MICA teaching the CCC course said "The actor in protagonist's role particularly impressed me by keeping his bearing of his assumed persona throughout the play. It was like watching a pro. And not to forget the memorable last sequence where his cap falls to show his bald head, his commitment to theater by actually shaving his head partially to look bald." The play was directed by Sidharth Uchil, a second year student at MICA.

The event has set the tone for the upcoming year, where the bar of expectations is sky high. Sankalp plans to associate itself with Thespo and will organize theatre workshop for its students at MICA. It will be followed up by Khula Aasmaan, an open platform that encourages students to showcase their theatrical ideas.

This year, Natrani, the annual production of MICA, is slated to be organised at a much bigger scale. It is a much awaited event on Ahmedabad's cultural calendar that sees audiences from all walks of life. Sankalp's 3-day, grand pan-Indian theatrical festival will also be organized on campus along with the production at Natrani amphitheatre.

This year at MICA promises to fill with dramatic and spectacular performances!
