San Diego Heating and Air Expert Shares Simple Solution for Deterring Freon Thieves

Share |

San Diego heating and air company owner Gabriel Carini says a simple locking refrigerant cap protects air conditioning units in residential and commercial areas from would-be Freon thieves.

San Diego, CA (I-Newswire) July 21, 2011 - SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - Theft of air conditioning refrigerant is becoming more prevalent, according to Gabriel Carini, a San Diego heating and air service and installation expert.

Air conditioning refrigerants can be used, like many other chemicals and poisons, as an inhalant for a quick, potentially fatal high. People target the outdoor units because there are so many available and extracting the Freon is simple. "The simplest, least expensive way to discourage potential Freon thieves is a locking refrigerant cap," says Carini, owner of the San Diego heating repair company.

For $30, the unit's outdoor access points can be locked. The owner can install them following the package directions, or a heating and cooling technician can install them during a heating service call, bi-annual unit inspection or system installation. "This bars children, teens or adults from getting to dangerous refrigerant fluid, and if no one can access it to steal, the owner won't have to pay for a Freon refill," says Carini, a San Diego air conditioners expert.

The color-coded, tamper-resistant covers screw on to the access points of all standard air conditioning units. They can only be removed from the air conditioners refrigerant lines with a special key.

The International Mechanical Code and International Residential Code mandated in 2009 that all refrigerant circuit access ports located outdoors should be fitted with locking-type tamper-resistant caps. "A heating and air conditioning repair and installation professional can help you find out whether or not your unit has locking caps," says Carini.
