Safety Levels for Exposure to GM Foods May Still Be Too High, Study Suggests

Popular herbicide "Roundup", focus of first long-term animal feeding trial.

Washington Depot, CT (I-Newswire) October 19, 2012 - A recent study from the Risk Quality and Sustainable Environment Unit at the University of Caen in France suggests that current safety levels for exposure to genetically modified (GM) foods and the weed killers commonly used with them may not be low enough.

In the first long-term animal feeding trial to examine the effects of Roundup, the world’s most used herbicide, rats were fed a diet containing NK603 Roundup-tolerant GM corn, or given water containing Roundup at levels currently permitted in US drinking water and GM crops. The rats died earlier than rats fed on a standard diet. In particular, they suffered mammary tumors and severe liver and kidney damage. Although several combinations and doses were studied, the scientists noted a “threshold effect” where even the lowest doses were associated with severe health problems.

“This is a red flag pointing out the need for more research into the long-term effects of all GM food crops,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH).

“We believe Americans have a right to know what they’re eating,” adds Dian. “If people don’t think GM products pose a problem, they are free to buy them. Particularly following this latest research, we’d like to know where they are being used so we can avoid them and the associated potential health problems. This is another example of a modern ‘food’ experiment we’re all unknowingly participating in. It will most likely end up causing health problems that could have been avoided.”
