ING New York City Marathon runners projected to raise more than $73,000 for high-potential students at New York’s Harlem Academy

New York, NY (I-Newswire) November 5, 2010 - A few runners are making a big difference for Harlem Academy by raising key scholarship dollars racing in the ING New York City Marathon this Sunday, November 7. Harlem Academy offers need-blind admissions and generous tuition support so every admitted student can afford to attend. The school anticipates that the efforts of the five runners will raise more than $73,000.

"We strongly believe that every individual should have the right to reach their potential, and we deeply support the academics, character building, and community values that Harlem Academy provides for its students," said Will Mayer, when asked why he and his father Bill are running. Will, a licensed clinical psychologist, and Bill, a founding partner of Park Avenue Equity Partners, are long-time supporters of Harlem Academy. Together this father and son team has raised more than $60,000 for the school.

"We have been impressed by the efforts of our runners and the generosity of the donors," said Head of School Vinny Dotoli, "This has been an exciting new fundraising opportunity for us, and we are grateful for the partnership with New York Road Runners."

Dan Scanfeld, husband of one of Harlem Academy's staff members, is an avid barefoot runner. After running eight marathons everywhere from New Orleans to Oregon to Philadelphia, Dan says he is, "excited to be running the next marathon to raise money for an organization in his neighborhood."

Harlem Academy parents Yolonda Pickett and Cedric Olivera will round out the team running on behalf of the school. "As a parent it is important to be engaged with the school and running the marathon is another fun way to do that," said Yolonda.
