Rise of Aester, a Steampunk-Themed Live Action Role Playing Game (LARP), Set to Premiere at Steamcon

(I-Newswire) October 22, 2009 - Seattle, WA (October 19, 2009) – At the invitation of Captain Collins, convention-goers at the Pacific Northwest’s inaugural Steampunk Symposium at the Seattle Airport Marriott, will have a chance to step onto the Observation Lounge of the airship Princess Arianrhod, as they steam their way through the Aester towards one of the Cities of Light. As they enjoy their tea and conversation…the situation turns to mutiny and murder!

Rise of Aester is a Steampunk-themed Live Action Role Playing Game (LARP); a game in which participants physically act out the actions of their assumed fictional characters. It portrays an alternate history where humanity has spent decades battered by a series of cataclysmic events that have threatened their very survival. But instead of the usual post-apocalyptic games that inundate the market, these adventurers look to the future with hope, not despair. In Rise of Aester, a golden age is just around the corner if mankind is bright enough, bold enough, and brave enough to seize it.

“We are thrilled to be debuting our demonstration games at Seattle Steamcon,” said Marshal Hunter, founder of Aesterlight Steampunk Studios. “We feel we differ from most LARPs in that we have worked to come up with a game that promotes role play over rules. Every time someone has to reach for a character sheet, it breaks the engagement the characters have with each other and the story. As a result, we have been working on a minimal rule system that will allow us to achieve a situation where the rules don’t get in the way of participants’ immersion in the world.”

Online registration has closed for the convention (http://www.steam-con.com) but there will be limited membership passes available at the door; the event runs from Friday, Oct 23rd to Sunday, Oct 25th. Demonstration games, which will take place in a lavish set complete with tea and refreshments provided by Seattle’s tea purveyor B. Fuller, will run on Saturday and Sunday. The demo fast play rules will be available in a booklet with concept art and stories, so that participants can host their own games at home.
