On Monday, the National Weather Service damage survey team in Jackson, Mississippi confirmed that a long-tracked EF-4 tornado touched down in Lamar and Forrest counties Sunday afternoon/evening. Extensive EF-4 tornado damage with winds of 170 mph was observed from Oak Grove in Lamar County to Hattiesburg in Forrest County. Damage includes at least 300 damaged homes/buildings (including 200 homes/mobile homes and 100 apartments), a number of destroyed property, a destroyed barn, and numerous of powerlines and trees down. Nearly 100 roads were blocked or covered with debris.
Ricky Sinclair, bishop of Miracle Place Church in Baker, LA, stated his son is attending school in Mississippi and is looking to transfer into a Division 1 school in the fall. Late last year they visited Southern Mississippi University and really like the people and atmosphere. While grateful there was no loss of life, Ricky Sinclair was so touched by the devastation left by the tornado.
