Because Hope Matters Radio Feature Episode: Resilient Military Families

Featured Guests: Colonel Bill and Mrs. Stephanie Hamm

Summary/Description:
The media has often put a spotlight on Mia Hamm as a world renowned Olympic and world cup soccer champion. Her team paved the way for the formation of the first woman's professional soccer league, the first FIFA Woman's World Cup in the sport and two Olympic team medals.

Join us on Monday, November 25th at 7:00 PM EST as we talk about Growing Up, Base to Base, with Mia's parents: Colonel Bill and Mrs. Stephanie Hamm. Mia was one of six children navigating seven moves in their father's military career. Colonel Bill Hamm served more than twenty years on active duty as an Air Force fighter pilot, including 273 combat missions during Vietnam.

Stephanie Hamm was quite familiar with the military lifestyle herself, having grown up a military "brat" daughter of an Air Force pilot. Bill and Stephanie conveyed a special calling to Selma, Alabama, electing two tours of duty at (then) Craig Air Force Base - where deep rooted issues were being altered by the civil rights movement. It was there, that their oldest three daughters were born: Tiffany Elizabeth, Lovdy Ellen and Mariel Margaret (Mia) - and where they began planting good deeds in the larger community.

Follow-on duties led Colonel Hamm to language training and three tours in Italy, including an Olmstead Scholarship at University of Florence, the US Embassy in Rome, and with allied forces (NATO) in Naples. Prior assignments in Texas brought the blessing of another daughter, Caroline Patricia and two adopted sons, Garrett John and Martin William. The tours in Italy gave birth to the "Hamm soccer squad."

In this extraordinary episode, we'll reflect on the traits of resilient military families, the lessons learned when heartbreak occurs, and the challenges facing military families. In closing our spotlight on National Military Family Appreciation Month, we'll delve into the military roots of a soccer champion's family and the paths taken since retirement.
