Lewis Aron, director of New York University’s postdoctoral program in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, will speak on “Deconstructing Psychotherapy/Psychoanalysis: Unsuspected Relevance to Hate and Prejudice Today.”

(I-Newswire) March 3, 2010 - Adelphi University is pleased to welcome Lewis Aron, director of New York University’s postdoctoral program in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, as he speaks on “Deconstructing Psychotherapy/Psychoanalysis: Unsuspected Relevance to Hate and Prejudice Today.” The event is sponsored by the Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies’ annual Lindemann Lecture in Human Development, and will take place on Friday, March 12, 2010, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in Adelphi’s Performing Arts Center (AU PAC) Concert Hall, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Aron will challenge the long-held belief that psychoanalysis is at odds with psychotherapy, and in particular, he will explore the implications of gender, cultural, and racial stereotyping. He will also examine the concept of suggestion by considering the post-World War historical context in America and tracing the historical origins of this polarization back to Sigmund Freud.

In addition to his role at New York University, Dr. Aron is an honorary member of the William Alanson White Psychoanalytic Society and was the founding president of both the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, and the Division of Psychoanalysis of the New York State Psychological Association (NYSPA). He was a founder of the journal Psychoanalytic Dialogues, and founder and co-chair of the Sandor Ferenczi Center at the New School for Social Research. Dr. Aron has been president of Division 39, and the Division of Psychoanalysis of the American Psychological Association (APA). He is the author of A Meeting of Minds: Mutuality in Psychoanalysis, and has edited and co-edited many volumes in the Relational Perspectives book series.

Dr. Aron holds a diplomat in psychoanalysis from the American Board of Professional Psychology and is a fellow of the APA. He has a private practice in New York City and in Port Washington, New York.

The Lindemann Lecture in Human Development is an annual lecture series endowed by Carol Lindemann ’70 Ph.D., president of the Lindemann Abend Foundation, which allows Adelphi to sponsor campus lectures by some of the foremost thinkers and writers in the field of psychology.
