How to Find The Right Remodeler for Your Home

(I-Newswire) February 27, 2008 - As the collective real estate market has shifted away from the "House Flipping" days, the homeowner is now getting cozy with the idea of settling in their current house. So, what about the home that you were going to buy with the extra exercise room? What about the drafty windows that you only had to put up with for one more year? It may be time to think about remodeling.

The main question is, how do you find a good remodeler? After all, many of us have tried to imitate "Tim the Tool Man Taylor" one way or another. You know, you go to the local hardware store, buy a brand new hammer, some nails, and voila' - time to build the new shed! Then usually after about 6 months of looking at the partially finished monstrosity that is the centerpiece of your backyard paradise, you pick up the phone book. Now the real search begins.

The first rule of thumb is to make sure you find a company with a good reputation. Part of its reputation will be based on longevity and customer references. The other part will be based on what kind of insurance they carry. Before anyone begins remodeling your house, make sure they have coverage. This will protect you from problems ranging from damage to your house or injuries to the workers.

The second recommendation is to find a company that has an established warranty. This gives you something to fall back on if your remodeling has problems after the job is done. When it comes down to it, a warranty is only as good as the company backing it (which goes back to why item one is so important). However, the more paperwork you have the better backup you have in case of problems.

The final recommendation is to meet with more than one company and choose the one with which you are most comfortable. A low price is nice, but that should not be the deciding factor. A firm and clean contract, professional presentation, and a detail of what products the builder intends to use should aid in your decision making. Those comfort building items may create extra costs for the professional remodeler. Naturally, that may mean that your price is higher; but in the end, you will save yourself from some sleepless nights.

Finding a remodeler is not difficult. The phone book, internet, local association listings, and referrals from friends are some of the best ways to get started. Take these suggestions into consideration as you are selecting your contractor and you'll be on the right track to the perfect addition to your home. (http://www.dawolhomes.com)
