QATAR COOL GOLD SPONSORS OF SUSTAINABILITY CONFERENCE IN DOHA

Doha, Qatar March 14: Sustainable development in Qatar is about meeting the needs of people today without depriving others from achieving their future needs, according to Qatar’s sole district cooling supplier.

Qatar Cool, as part of its continued vision to be the leading provider of reliable, efficient and environmentally–friendly district cooling services, is the main sponsor of the ‘Building Sustainable Communities in Qatar’ conference which is being held in Doha 15-16 March.

The conference will bring together Qatar’s major developers, contractors, architects, engineers and consultants to discuss the key issues arising from sustainable development.

Mr. Issa Qandeel, Qatar Cool’s Projects Department Manager and Mr. Aniruddha Kulkarni, the Operations and Service Manager are presenting to the conference on Monday 15 March.
They say that Qatar is located in one of the best regions in the world for district cooling usage and deriving environmentally-friendly benefits from it

The presentation will focus on Qatar Cool’s current and future projects including the construction of the world’s largest district cooling plant at The Pearl-Qatar. The plant officially known as the ‘Integrated District Cooling Plant will be completed by the end of 2010.

Mr. Kulkarni will highlight the achievements of Qatar Cool in the West Bay area and will present data collected since January confirming, the energy saving forecasted from district cooling systems.

‘’Sustainable development is where present needs are met without depriving others from meeting their present or future needs and is a core value of Qatar Cool’s mission statement,” says Mr. Kulkarni.

“By sponsoring this event we hope to encourage other major developers and contractors to engage in key issues facing Qatar, such as soaring power demand and increasing CO2 generation , and find solutions to address these issues,’’ says Mr. Qandeel.

Qatar Cool is already paving the way to sustainable communities in Qatar by addressing several key issues simultaneously. The district cooling utility uses up to 60% less power than conventional air-conditioners resulting in less CO2, NO2 and other harmful gas emissions, it produces less noise pollution and creates more space allowing for more greenery; thus providing a healthier atmosphere and meeting the demand for synergy between environment, energy and economy.

Qatar Cool will be exhibiting at the conference and welcomes all attendees to visit their stand for an interactive and informative experience.

Qatar Cool recently opened their second plant in the West Bay area, with a capacity of 37,000 TR, which is connected through an underground network to Plant 1, housing a capacity of 30,000 TR. The combined plants will serve more than 45 towers in the area by 2011; this will include a mixture of Residential Towers, Office Towers, mix - use towers and raft of new hotels that are currently still at construction stage.

About Qatar Cool:
Qatar District Cooling Company, known as Qatar Cool, is a private sector joint venture company owned 51% by United Development Company (UDC), 44% by National District Cooling Company (Tabreed) and 5% by other private Qatari investors. Qatar Cool’s aim is to provide efficient district cooling solutions and services for commercial and residential projects in Qatar. Their district cooling operations in the West Bay area of Doha – consisting of two plants covering 10 square kilometres – is currently supplying over 67,000 refrigerating tons of cooling, serving more than 45 towers used for residential, commercial and recreational purposes. The capacity of both plants is enough to supply about two million square meters of air conditioned area. Qatar Cool is also commissioned to provide district cooling for The Pearl-Qatar. District Cooling is an important feature in The Pearl's advanced infrastructure. It will be available throughout the island with a requirement of 130,000 tons of refrigeration when fully occupied. To supply this demand, construction of the Qatar Cool District Cooling Plant on the island has already begun and will be operational in phases.

About District Cooling:
District Cooling provides chilled water from a cooling plant through a network of pipes to multiple residential, industrial and commercial buildings for air conditioning purposes. Qatar witnessed the first commercial district cooling plant in 2006, which is owned and operated by Qatar Cool. Qatar Cool’s district cooling can save between 40 to 60 percent of the required power over conventional systems. The other benefit of district cooling for Qatar is that less usage of power means less harmful emissions, less noise, and less refrigerant leakage.
The economic benefits of district cooling are enjoyed by both owner and tenant, where capital costs of control panels, internal power distribution, annual maintenance and power consumption inside the building are reduced.
