Progressive Sorority Welcomes New Undergraduate Colony

Gamma Rho Lambda (GRL) – the first national lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and ally (LBTQA) sorority – announces the establishment of a new colony at Purdue University.

(I-Newswire) October 27, 2009 - West Lafayette, Indiana, October 26, 2009 – Gamma Rho Lambda (GRL) – the first national lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and ally (LBTQA) sorority – has established a colony at Purdue University. It is GRL’s sixth active colony and its first in Indiana.

Nine students at Purdue University banded together to form the first group of young women who were inducted at Purdue Colony the last weekend. President Jordan Malott says, “We are really excited to fulfill a niche in the Greek community and provide a much needed place of comfort for LBTQA students here at Purdue.”

GRL is dedicated to providing a social support system for young college students. While the organization does focus on lesbian, transgender and ally issues, it strives to be inclusive of all members, regardless of their sexual orientation or identity.

“I’m excited to see GRL continue to grow,” said Janette Smith, the Vice President of Expansion for Gamma Rho Lambda National Sorority. “Purdue is a top ranked school with a strong Greek system and a commitment to diversity. I am confident that this colony will be successful in ultimately becoming a fully recognized chapter of Gamma Rho Lambda.”

About Gamma Rho Lambda

Gamma Rho Lambda was founded at Arizona State University in 2003. It has continued to expand across the country and now has active chapters at Arizona State University and San Diego State University. Gamma Rho Lambda has four colonies at Kansas State University; California State University, Northridge; University of California, Los Angeles; and Purdue University. State University of New York, Albany, will soon join Purdue as the organization’s seventh new colony.
