Probiotics May Not Be Effective in Treating Your Baby's Colic

Probiotics are nowadays considered as a precautionary remedy against bacterial infections.

(http://www.xmaspharmacy.com/) : Worried about your newborn's excessive crying and thinking about using probiotics? Don't be lured by their excessive popularity. Please note that probiotics is not a panacea for all the diseases. It may or may not work for your baby.

Probiotics are nowadays considered as a precautionary remedy against bacterial infections. Probiotics contain good bacteria that help to improve your digestive problems. It is a hope for many parents to treat their children's colic. However, according to a research, using probiotics to cure infant colic may not work as efficiently as perceived.

Infant colic is characterized by unexplained crying or fussing of babies. It is believed to be associated with digestion problems. It usually affects infants of ages 6 weeks to 3 months.

Researchers conducted 12 trials in which 1,825 infants were involved. Some of them received probiotics, some were given placebos and remaining infants were given no treatment. The results were conflicting. In six trials use of probiotics lead to reduced crying while in remaining six studies, no such effect of probiotics was perceived. One trial suggested that probiotics were more useful in formula fed babies while another trial suggested that probiotics were more useful in breast fed babies. Only two studies indicated possible benefits of probiotics.

Thus, researchers concluded that not every child benefits from colic. Generally colic is a short term disease and goes away of its own. If other developmental aspects of the baby are alright i.e. a baby is eating and sleeping well, gaining weight properly, no treatment is required. However, if the colic does not disappear within a few weeks, researchers advocate consultation with pediatrician.

The study doesn't prove that probiotics are completely useless in treating colic. Researchers expressed hope that more research would help to throw more light on this topic. They are going for large scale, extensive and better-designed clinical trials to determine course of action for prevention of colic in infants.
