PureTemp Earns USDA Biobased Product Certification

Nineteen PureTemp phase change materials, with temperature ranges from 39 to 154 degrees Fahrenheit, have been designated as 100 percent biobased.

Entropy Solutions Inc.’s PureTemp phase change material has earned the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Certified Biobased Product Label. The label verifies that the amount of renewable biobased material in the product meets or exceeds levels set by the USDA.

The USDA defines biobased products as finished or intermediate materials composed in whole or in significant part of agricultural, forestry or marine ingredients.

"The USDA BioPreferred program's approval reflects our commitment to serving our customers in an environmentally responsible way."

Dr. William R. Sutterlin, Chief Chemical Officer, Entropy Solutions

A vegetable oil derivative, PureTemp phase change material absorbs thermal energy and then releases it as necessary to hold specific temperatures for extended periods of time without additional energy. It is used in a variety of products, including cooling vests, warming blankets, solar-powered refrigerators and temperature-controlled shipping containers.

Nineteen PureTemp products, with temperature ranges from 39 to 154 degrees Fahrenheit, have been designated as 100 percent biobased. PureTemp has been added to the USDA BioPreferred Catalog in two categories: phase change materials and heat transfer fluids. PureTemp also been awarded the Federal Procurement Preference, meaning it is now preferred by federal agencies and their contractors when making purchasing decisions.

“Entropy’s goal in creating the PureTemp line has been to use green chemistry and naturally based agricultural feedstock to make the world’s best phase change materials,” said Dr. William R. Sutterlin, Entropy Solutions’ chief chemical officer. “The USDA BioPreferred program’s approval reflects our commitment to serving our customers in an environmentally responsible way.”

All biobased amount claims are verified by independent labs and monitored by the USDA. The agency’s goal is to provide consumers with accurate information about the amount of biobased material in products and encourage the use of biobased products.

About USDA BioPreferred

The USDA BioPreferred program was created by the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 and expanded by the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008. The purpose is to increase the purchase and use of biobased products. The U.S. Department of Agriculture manages the program. Products that meet the USDA BioPreferred program requirements carry a distinctive label for easier identification by the consumer.
