Leading Fire Safety Provider Urges Businesses to Assess Risk in Light of the Government's Latest Findings

The UK's most established fire safety training provider Workplace Fire and Safety Training Ltd. (WFST) has reinforced the importance of carrying out fire risk assessments to businesses from all sectors.

Based in Coventry, WFST is the only training provider in the UK to deliver fire safety programs in accordance with the DSAT (Defence System Approach to Training) model.

According to the government’s Department for Communities and Local Government, 22,500 fires were recorded in non-domestic buildings between 2012 and 2013. Whilst these statistics have improved, with 18% less fires compared to the same period in 2011-12, WFST is urging organisations not to take fire safety for granted.

“The latest government figures show a 41% reduction in the number of non-domestic fires compared to a decade ago, however, the causes of these emergencies in the majority of cases are preventable. Only by completing a regular fire risk assessment will every company be able to take control of safety and effectively protect the individuals that they employ,” said Managing Director Neil Flynn, who has over 20 years’ experience working in the Fire & Rescue Services within the Local Authority and the military.

More than half of fire deaths in buildings that were not dwellings resulted from smoker’s material or cigarette lighters, whilst 65% of deaths occurred in buildings where there no smoke alarms were fitted.

Under UK legislation, a written record of fire risk assessment must be kept if a business employs five or more people. Owners, landlords and business occupiers are also deemed the ‘responsible person’, and have a duty to comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Conducting and reviewing fire risk is an essential part of this responsibility.

Neil added: “Maintaining your role as a responsible person may seem like a particularly daunting task, however we can assist you in meeting your legal obligations. Our team of 35 fire risk assessors complete comprehensive assessments of corporate premises and from just £290 you can ensure your commercial building is safe with identified risks reduced or completely eliminated.”
