The Patent Pending Rod Retriever was invented by Scott Brefeld of Round Lake, IL, who said, “When a rod equipped with the Rod Retriever is dropped into the water, water is conducted into the interior chamber of the Rod Retriever cap. The exterior surface of the cap is equipped with a time-activated, permeable membrane port designed to allow water to enter the cap only after the Rod Retriever has been immersed in water for 10 minutes.”

The inventor added, “Once the rod has been underwater for 10 minutes, the membrane allows water to enter the Rod Retriever Cap chamber. Water fills the chamber and causes the sponge-like, expandable material to expand, the expanding cylinder forcing the Rod Retriever cap off the butt of the rod. Once the cap comes off, the blaze-orange float rises to the surface trailing the lightweight retrieval line behind it. The float on the surface guides the angler to his or her rod, which they retrieve by grasping the float and pulling in the line.”
