Baltimore Author Publishes Memoir on Schizoaffective Disorder Experiences

A first-time Baltimore, MD author is entering the publishing world with a candid, first-person experience about schizoaffective disorder of the bipolar type.

Schizoaffective disorder, which combines elements of bipolar, such as mania and depression, with elements of schizophrenia, including paranoia and delusions, is a mental illness affecting approximately .2% of the US population. In Icarus Redeemed: A Schizoaffective Story, GH Francis explores three manic episodes, resulting in hospitalizations in numerous area facilities, including Shepherd Pratt and Laurel Regional Hospital.

The author’s intent is to give hope to those living with the disorder as well as their loved ones. According to GH Francis, “It’s not an easy disorder to live with, but I’ve learned to manage it extremely well. Writing the book was a cathartic experience that purged long-buried fears and embarrassments. I hope that it will reach a wide audience, especially those experiencing the disorder in some way, because I feel it gives hope to situations that often seem hopeless, and helps people understand that it can be managed, and that the dream of a normal life is not lost upon diagnosis. The new year is the perfect time for change, and I want this book to signify the start of a new life for those living through schizoaffective disorder.”

GH Francis

The book is an extremely open telling of the author’s experiences that occurred primarily in the Baltimore area, but extend as far as Kansas and Arizona, during a seven-year period. When asked why he chose to publish online, the author stated, “I just want to get it out there for now, but print publication is on my list of things to do, and I hope some initial success online will help that come to fruition.”

The book can be downloaded in eBook form or read online at icarusredeemed.com for $9.99.
