Research conducted by the University of Miami has found that massage during pregnancy helps to ease anxiety, sleeplessness and other common worries experienced during pregnancy
Massage during pregnancy was always practiced for centuries, but it was not until a few decades ago that people started realizing the obvious benefits associated with a massage during pregnancy.
A study conducted by the University of Miami concludes that massage during pregnancy can help ease several problems experienced during this period. It was found that massage helped to lower anxiety, decrease back and leg pain, and even help expecting mothers to sleep better.
"A heavy uterus reduces the flow of blood to the back, leg and joints. Massage encourages the release of serotonin and dopamine- hormones that alleviate pain. This gives comfort against back aches and leg pain. As for swelling in the joints, massage helps to prevent fluids from being collected," says Domonique of Domonique's Remedial Massage, Dom Massage. Of the 80 massage types, three are most common; deep tissue, Swedish and pregnancy/post natal massage. The type of massage that is best applicable to the expecting/new mother depends on the trimester that she is going through. For instance, deep tissue massage is avoided whilst in the third trimester. Similarly, foot massage is avoided until the expecting mother is 38 weeks into pregnancy. Women with certain health conditions like preeclampsia, pregnancy induced hypertension etc. are advised to wait until it safe for them to opt for massage. And so are women considered candidates for high risk pregnancy.
