Pradaxa and Warfarin- the Battle Among Two Devils!

PRADAXA is the first approved oral alternative to warfarin in over 50 years to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with AFib not caused by a heart valve problem. PRADAXA is not for use in people with artificial heart valves.

(http://www.dopharmacy.com/) : If you have undergone heart valve replacement surgery, you are more likely to be given blood thinner medications like warfarin or Pradaxa. A new study shows that when blood thinner Pradaxa is used by patients having mechanical heart valves can increase the risk of blood clots and bleeding around the heart.

Pradaxa (dabigatran) is a medicine which is used in the treatment of a disease known as atrial fibrillation. It prevents blood clotting and is considered as an alternative to a medicine known as warfarin.

The study included 252 patients who had aortic or mitral valve replacement. They were randomly assigned to Pradaxa or warfarin. Some patients had undergone heart valve replacement surgery one week before the experiment while the others had surgery three months earlier.

It was found that 32% of those patients who were taking Pradaxa had their dosage changed or stopped. In addition 5% of these patients suffered from stroke. It was nil in patients who were taking warfarin.

Similarly, 4% of patients who were taking Pradaxa experienced major bleeding around heart compared to only 2% of patients who were taking warfarin.

After heart valve replacement surgery, patients are usually given blood thinner medications. They reduce the risk of blood clotting and stroke. However, side effect associated with these medications is that they may cause severe bleeding around the heart.

According to researchers, when warfarin is to be put to use, lifetime monitoring becomes necessary. Warfarin is Vitamin K antagonist and is very useful in combating blood clotting however is necessitates monthly blood tests and several dietary restrictions. This medicine may also interfere with other medications and cause harmful complications. When Pradexa was considered, it was found to be even more problematic than warfarin.

Researchers hoping that if these medications are taken with oral blood clotting inhibitor, there will be reduction in risk of heart attack and stroke. If it is successful, there will be less need of dietary restrictions and regular monitoring.
