VISITORS will step back in time to the late 15th century for ‘The Matthew Mediaeval Festival’ this October (22 to 30).
(I-Newswire) - Whilst most of the country will be focussing on Horatio Nelson, and the victory at the Battle of Trafalgar 200 years ago on October 21, 1805, operators of The Matthew will be turning the clock back further in history. The Matthew Mediaeval Festival is one of the highlights of the ‘Sea Britain See Bristol’ celebrations.
There will be plenty to see and do during the festival, based around The Matthew – Bristol’s own replica of explorer John Cabot’s caravel. Staff members at the ss Great Britain Trust, who manage and operate The Matthew, are organising the series of events.
Mediaeval re-enactors will be performing tasks, on October 28, which were commonplace in the 15th century – from tool making to basket weaving, and rope-making. Men and women in costume, and in character, will give visitors an insight into life 500 years ago. Entry is part of the admission charge for the Brunel’s ss Great Britain.
Volunteers on The Matthew also help to bring the ship to life with stories of her voyages – both in 1497, and from 1997 onwards when the replica of The Matthew was built for the 500th year anniversary of Cabot’s ‘discovery’ of Newfoundland.
On October 22 and 23 there are sailing workshops for children, aged seven to 14. Children who consider themselves a budding Cabot, or Nelson, can learn knots, signals, and sea shanties, and how to sail, with Bristol Sailing School. Times are 10am to 12 noon, and 1-3pm. Cost per child is £6, which includes entry to Brunel's ss Great Britain and The Matthew. Places can be booked through the ss Great Britain Trust’s education department.
On October 27 there are daytime ‘mini-cruises’ on The Matthew around Bristol's Floating Harbour. Sailings, which last 40 minutes, run at 11am, 12 noon, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm, and 5pm. There is a cost of £6 for adults and £4 for children, with up to 40 passengers per sailing.
Mike Cannings, Director of Commerce for the ss Great Britain Trust, which operates and manages The Matthew, commented: “The Matthew is well-loved throughout Bristol, and deserves her own mediaeval festival. There will be plenty to see and do for people of all ages and interests – from sailing workshops for children, to mediaeval re-enactors, and mini-cruises in the harbour.”
Mr Cannings added: “Whilst much of the country will be focussing on Horatio Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar, we have decided to turn the spotlight on John Cabot, and some of the nautical advancements of the mediaeval age.”
Other events on board The Matthew are: Evening harbour cruises on September 6, 8, 13, 22, 27, and 29, and October 25. Evening harbour cruises, from 6pm to 8.30pm, cost £12 for adults and £8 for children. There will also be an evening harbour cruise and supper on September 20, from 6pm to 8.30pm, which costs £26.
On December 3 and 4 The Matthew will be taking Christmas shoppers between the ss Great Britain and the city centre. Travel on board The Matthew is part of the admission charge for Brunel’s ss Great Britain.
Please call 0117 926 0680 to book places on the sailing workshop, or to check details.
The Matthew is also available for corporate and private hire.
