Dental Phobics applaud choice of "Best Young Dentist - UK"
Dentist Mike Gow, who specialises in dental anxiety management, has been announced the winner of the prestigious "Best Young Dentist - UK" award at the Dentistry Awards 2008. Dental Fear Central, a voluntary organisation set up to help dental phobics worldwide, applauds this choice.
(I-Newswire) - Dentist Dr Mike Gow, who specialises in dental anxiety management, has been announced the winner of the prestigious "Best Young Dentist - UK" award at the Dentistry Awards 2008. The official ceremony took place on Friday, December 12th.
The Dentistry Awards, which are fast becoming a firmly established event in the U.K. dental profession, were launched in 2006.
Since 2004, Dr Gow has been actively involved with Dental Fear Central, an organisation set up by volunteers who have suffered with dental phobia themselves. The organisation aims to provide information, support and advice for anyone who is afraid of dentists or dental procedures. Through Dental Fear Central, Dr Gow has built on his interest in helping nervous and phobic patients overcome their fear of the dentist since graduating from Glasgow University Dental School in 1999. He enjoys sharing in the positive experiences of the people whom he helps.
A spokesperson for Dental Fear Central, who wishes to remain anonymous, says: "I am very pleased that the Best Young Dentist 2008 award has been won by someone who is involved in Dental Fear Central, and I am delighted because it highlights the issue of dental phobia within the dental profession."
"A phobia is not the same as the anxiety we may all experience when faced with the unknown. The people who visit our website and forum are, by and large, utterly terrified of dentists - to the point where they will avoid seeing a dentist even when in extreme pain."
"Dental phobia is often an unrecognised problem here in the U.K. as well as other parts of the world. In an effort to help those who are suffering due to their extreme fear, we have created a website dedicated to the subject, www.dentalfearcentral.org. Over the last four years our membership has grown tremendously and the majority of our members have indeed gathered the courage to seek help."
"We have a few dentists who graciously dedicate time to answering questions, including Dr Mike Gow. Mike's experience and advice greatly adds to the value of the online support group. Our members share recommendations and support one another throughout the entire dental journey. One of the phrases we see most often is, 'it's so nice to know I'm not alone.' It is my hope that we can reach a few more people and let them know that they are definitely not alone."
"We urge people who experience dental phobia to visit Dental Fear Central."
Dental Fear Central, which started in 2004, is an independent and unfunded UK based online organisation which supports people to overcome dental fear. Each month the Dental Fear Central website receives over 60,000 visitors. Dental Fear Central's website and online support group can be found at www.dentalfearcentral.org.
