HP and Scripps Health Collaborate on Enterprise Data Archive System to Improve Patient Care and Safety
New clinical system gives Scripps' staff better access to information in order to support quality improvement initiatives
(I-Newswire) - HP today announced an agreement with Scripps Health to jointly develop a clinical intelligence system, called the Enterprise Data Archive, to help Scripps improve patient care and safety within its hospitals and clinics.
HP was selected to support the Enterprise Data Archive initiative by delivering a comprehensive solution that will be composed of commercially available software and hardware components engineered specifically to accommodate Scripps' requirements.
In addition to HP solution integrator services, HP NonStop servers are key components of the new Scripps Enterprise Data Archive and will also be used as Scripps' Clinical Information System Disaster Recovery solution.
Recognized as a world leader in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, Scripps is on the forefront of prevention, medical innovation, clinical research and technology, treating nearly half a million patients each year throughout San Diego County.
"One of our priorities over the past several years has been to invest in building an information system that improves patient care by enabling fast, secure access to patient information by and between our caregivers, enhancing patient safety measures and ultimately making it possible to develop and maintain an electronic medical record for every Scripps patient," said Jean Balgrosky, senior vice president and chief information officer, Scripps Health. "The Scripps Enterprise Data Archive system moves us closer to that goal and will enable us to gain greater insight and knowledge from our many data systems, thus enhancing our ability to deliver the highest quality health care in a safe, cost-effective and socially responsible manner."
When completed, the Enterprise Data Archive will enable Scripps' medical staff of 2,600 physicians located across a network of hospitals and clinics to gain additional insight from a wealth of data to support medical treatments, quality and safety initiatives, outcomes and other retrospective studies aimed at improving the quality and cost of care.
"HP's health and wellness solutions enable medical professionals to gain new insights into existing and future pools of research and patient data," said Jeff Miller, worldwide vice president, Health and Education Industries, HP. "The Scripps system needed to meet the most stringent and complex requirements, delivering a truly integrated view of patient data along with unmatched linear scalability and the lowest total cost of ownership. HP is excited to work with Scripps to provide better access to patient information and to help them realize their vision of true clinical intelligence."
As Scripps implements new electronic medical records initiatives, its Enterprise Data Archive will help it successfully extract, normalize and archive vital historical data on a medium other than paper and in a way that makes it available and accessible for ongoing patient care and research purposes. With this project, Scripps, HP and other companies participating in this effort intend to demonstrate to the industry a way to meet these pivotal electronic medical records goals.
"Scripps is committed to providing the highest quality health care for our patients," said Joseph Traube, MD, chief medical informatics officer, Scripps. "Instant access to a complete set of relevant information at the point of clinical decision-making is the key to achieving this goal."
The first phase of the project will extract both historical and current data from Scripps' clinical, financial, inpatient and outpatient systems and load that data into a database system that can immediately support and enhance clinical intelligence, ad hoc queries, quality reports and dashboards.
The goal of subsequent phases will be to consolidate clinical data from the remaining clinical information systems into Scripps Enterprise Data Archive system. This initiative also allows Scripps to retire legacy systems no longer in production, while retaining troves of important data.
