Mark Lester from ‘Oliver’ to King Harold.
For Immediate Release
Press Release 1066 August 13th 2007
More top names attracted to epic movie - 1066
(I-Newswire) - Mark Lester gained worldwide fame as Oliver, the young orphan in Carol Reed’s 1968 musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ famous novel Oliver. The film garnered five Oscars. After a ten year stint and some twenty movies later Mark Lester retired from acting, eventually becoming an osteopath, marrying and having four children.
Now Mark Lester is set to return to the movies in one of the greatest roles in English history, Harold Godwinson, in 1066. Producers Chris Carson and Robin Jacob have been eying various actors for the role, trying not to cast from the ‘usual suspects’ but to find someone who can bring something new to epic movies. “We were looking for someone unique, an actor who is well known but who can bring life and inspiration to the role of Harold, but someone who was not cluttered with the baggage of other major roles. Mark was an inspired choice – everyone remembers the boy who played “Oliver” and made it his own! He will now be remembered for setting the benchmark for Harold.
Director Robin Jacob contacted Mark about playing the part of King Harold in 1066. Mark read the script and responded immediately. “I think it would make a great film it has all the right components”.
Mark has now joined the production and will play King Harold. He is of a similar age to Harold at the Battle of Hastings and has maintained his fitness through Karate and in now a Black Belt. He is eager to get back into acting and to take on this great role which he enthusiastically intends to make his own.
Ian Whyte who is attached to play Viking King Hardrada said “I think the quality of the script speaks for itself and once the word gets around that it is of a very high standard then people are going to want to get involved, including agents with worthy clients.”
“There are so many good roles in this movie”. Says Robin Jacob that actors will have the rare chance to make the roles their own and set the benchmark. Unlike Shakespeare or the plethora of re-makes no one has established these characters from the eleventh century, the roles are unique.”
“The whole team involved with this movie is passionate about it – Bronwen Harrison’s & Alessandro Ponti's music, Chris Collingwood’s art work. Helen Hollick’s novel Harold the King has already proved its worth as a potential long-term classic historic novel. 1066 the movie has all the ingredients of also being an all-time great classic – after all, that date is the most famous date in English History. The public, too are enthusiastic – the official website http://1066themovie.biz is frequently visited and the Myspace profile www.myspace.com/haroldgodwinson is being inundated with “friends” requests. Helen Hollick, who edits the site, says; “The most frequent questions I get asked are “can I be an extra” and “You will do Harold justice won’t you? He was our last English King, he died for freedom and his Kingdom – he was a true hero.” I always answer, “Yes, we will!”
