Powering Search in Liferay Portals
Liferay is a popular choice in open source community as a Web Content Management (WCM).
Santa Clara, CA (I-Newswire) January 17, 2013 - Liferay is a popular choice in open source community as a Web Content Management (WCM). With its current capabilities, it can be scaled to support millions of documents. When a system has such huge capabilities, how can IT ensure leveraging the system in a way to benefit all the users? Ease and convenience of finding the information also must be addressed.
Searching within an enterprise data can be cumbersome task. With a centralized repository of all enterprise content and documents, searching a single document is like searching a needle in haystack! User has to put efforts in thinking some unique words within the document that can help narrow down the search. So, user has to keep guessing until they hit on the right document.
Liferay as a WCM platform has the unique capability of indexing. As and when content is created or added, content engine works to index the documents. Liferay can effectively be integrated with Lucene or SOLR search engines. During the indexing process, articles are not taken in consideration. Words left after dropping articles are considered as “keywords” by the system
Keyword proximity along with weightage is used while searching within Liferay. What does keyword proximity mean? A variation of a word is called stemming. The occurrences of the keyword and related words stemming from it are searched across: sentences, paragraph and content piece. Let us closely look at the search execution in SOLR. When a word like ‘content management’ is typed, each word is considered separately to search pieces of content containing stems of keyword and their occurrences to give due weightage. Words with closer keyword proximity are ranked higher. When a variation of a keyword is in higher frequency or stems of keywords appear in closer proximity, the content ranks higher in the search result.
Liferay has been an evolving platform and expanded its functionalities substantially. Liferay consultants with good Liferay implementation experience have in-and-out knowledge of search feature deployment. Considerable Liferay consulting can unleash to make powerful search deployments making efficient and user-friendly portals while improving the productivity and saving time.
