National computer forensics expert Jim Carden is launching a new Sacramento-based forensics company, Digital Blue Solutions. DBS will work with law firms, corporations and government agencies on a variety of computer forensics.

Sacramento, Calif. (I-Newswire) November 16, 2011 - Veteran detective and national computer forensics expert Jim Carden announced today the launch of a new digital forensics company called Digital Blue Solutions. The firm will provide a wide variety of computer forensics investigative services, as well as electronic discovery and litigation support, to corporations and major law firms.

Carden, a Woodland resident and long-time detective with the Fairfield Police Department, is a highly regarded computer forensics specialist. He will serve as the Sacramento-based company's president and chief executive officer and head up a strong team at DBS comprised of current or former federal, state and local law enforcement computer forensic and legal experts with a combined half-century of experience in the field.

“The explosion of electronic devices, from smart phones to mobile computers, has changed the way we all live, work and play, but also has created unprecedented demand for computer forensics experts,” Carden said.

“Electronic evidence is becoming ever more critical in legal proceedings, from corporate intellectual property theft cases to highly complex criminal investigations here at home and around the world,” he noted. “DBS has the team, expertise and technological understanding to rapidly becoming a leader in this emerging field.”

Digital Blue Solutions will offer a full array of electronic investigative services and litigation support designed to build legally defensible cases. Besides computer forensics, the company will provide electronic discovery, data recovery, expert witness, and law firm support services.

Carden said DBS’s examiners have worked on the most technical criminal forensic cases, where they had to deal with new and emerging technology on a daily basis. “They are routinely relied upon by fellow investigators, prosecutors, and other service professionals,” he said. “DBS examiners know how to circumnavigate lock codes and other security measures to legally obtain criminal evidence that otherwise might not be discovered.”

Trained in computer forensics, Carden was the Fairfield Police Department’s first certified computer forensic examiner and helped create the department’s digital forensics program. Over the years, he has testified in California Superior Court as an expert in the field of computer forensics. He is currently working to form a Computer Incident Response Team for the department’s crime scene investigation (CSI) team.

DBS’s senior management and investigative team also includes:

Kris Haworth, Corporate ESI Counsel. Haworth is one of the nation’s leading computer forensics specialists. She has more than 17 years of professional experience in the technology industry. Her cases have established national precedent in the field of electronic investigations and prosecution. As an attorney, she will work with Digital Blue Solutions clients in providing support services to law firms and corporate legal departments;

Rick Baca, Forensic Investigator. Baca started his investigations career in the private sector, including serving as regional investigations manager for Nordstrom stores in the Northeast region. Over the past decade he has worked in law enforcement and most recently assigned to the Police Investigations Bureau as the high-tech crimes detective and computer/digital forensic examiner. Baca has hundreds of hours of digital forensics and high-tech crime training and has testified as a computer forensic expert and a credit card encoding expert in court cases.

Michael McEwen, Forensics Investigator. McEwen, a senior detective with the San Diego Police Department, is a member of the department’s economic crimes section and the U.S. Secret Service’s Regional Fraud Task Force. He is a licensed Certified Public Accountant who specializes in investigative accounting and computer examinations. A 25-year veteran in the industry, McEwen’s experience includes 10 years as a forensic accounting supervisor and department director with Price Waterhouse Coopers and KPMG;

Steve Gardner, Forensics Investigator. Gardner has more than 20 years of law enforcement experience, including serving as the senior police forensics specialist with the Whittier Police Department, supervising the day-to-day operations of the forensic services unit. He has been recognized for his contributions to investigations by the California State Legislature and the U.S. Congress. He has received hundreds of hours of formal training in digital forensics from organizations such as the California Department of Justice and the National White Collar Crime Center. Gardner has also testified as a computer forensic expert in court cases.

Nolan Tracy, Forensics Investigator. A 15-year industry veteran, Tracy specializes in investigating computer and cellular phone related crimes. As a member of the Sacramento Valley High-Tech Crimes Task Force working with the FBI, he has invaluable experience in conducting both state and federal investigations. He also has years of experience investigating large-scale financial crimes and fraud. In addition, he has testified as an expert witness on computer and cellular telephone forensics.
