PerDiem In Home Staffing Ensures Patient Safety Through Falling Danger Awareness Program
Falling injuries are common in seniors; however they are preventable and can be avoided with the right precautions. PerDiem's Falling Danger Awareness program is an earnest initiative in this direction.
Ohio (I-Newswire) September 30, 2013 - In 2010, the Centers For Disease Control reported 2.3 million nonfatal fall injuries among older adults. Falling presents one of the largest in-home dangers for the senior citizen community. Of the 2.3 million injures reported in 2010, more than 662,000 of these patients were hospitalized. A hip fracture is most common and serious type of falling injury in seniors which accounts for a death rate of over 24. By enacting preventative measures and educating patients of the risks, PerDiem staff actively teaches seniors of ways to reduce trip hazards.
Falling in seniors more often than not results in a surgery and several weeks of rehab. Most of such cases involving severe injuries can easily be avoided if appropriate preventive measures are taken. "Our program will help families identify falling safety hazards for seniors and will provide tips to keep them safe.", says Brenda Michalski, the founder and owner of PerDiem.
Simple tips provided by PerDiem staff can largely reduce the risk of injury from falling. One of the first steps PerDiem staff members take is to work with the patients and focus on reducing trip hazards in all the rooms of the home. Items such as rugs, small furniture, pet bowls and phone or electrical cords can present immediate hazards; items such as slick or uneven floors and crowded walkways pose secondary threats. The program also includes tips for seniors to improve their balance and mobility skills.
Other helpful tips staff provide are as listed below:
- Arrange furniture to give you plenty of room to walk freely.
- Put non-slip strips on floors and steps.
- At home and elsewhere, try to avoid wet floors and clean up spills right away.
- Be careful when walking outdoors, and avoid going out alone on ice or snow.
- Be aware of poor lighting -- inside and outdoors -- can increase your risk of falls.
- Place a lamp within easy reach of your bed.
- Put night-lights in the bathroom, hallways, bedroom, and kitchen.
- Have handrails installed on both sides of stairs and walkways.
- Properly placed grab bars in your tub and shower, and next to the toilet.
If you have fallen, your doctor might suggest that an occupational therapist, physical therapist, or nurse visit your home. By utilizing the services provided by PerDiem In Home Nurse Staffing, families and patients can rest assured, knowing their safety and comfort is our top priority.
