A new report reveals that Latin America is emerging from a period of pulling itself up by its telecom bootstraps. Lately, most major telecommunications markets in the region have been opened to competition. The report finds the installed base of single-mode fiber in Latin America will rise to 30.6 million fiber-km in 2006 from 15.7 million in 2000. Cumulative deployment in the region will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 12 percent. The research includes profiles of each of the six major markets in the region: Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Chile and Ecuador, as well as profiles of the telco, cable TV and utility carriers serving those markets.
