Once Promotes The Social Dimension Of The Marca Espana In Europe

The Spanish National Organisation of Blind People (ONCE) says the European Union understands the importance of social initiatives such as its own.

The Spanish National Organisation of Blind People (ONCE) says the European Union understands the importance of social initiatives such as its own.

Miguel Carballeda, President of the ONCE and the ONCE Foundation, says the response from European institutions regarding the social dimension of the Marca España and the example of social aspects in Spain and the importance given to them has been "very positive".

Carballeda made these comments following a series of meetings in Brussels, at which he met the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, and President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz. The reason for these meetings was to show Europe the social model of the ONCE and its Foundation, under the slogan "Committed to the EU: 75th/25th anniversary of the ONCE and its Foundation". Another objective was to convey the social image of Spain.

"Around 4,000 of the people who work in the Parliament have been able to find out over the past few days about the job creation model of the ONCE and its Foundation, as well as the importance of the information society in the lives of disabled people", said Carballeda. "They were also able to learn about our country's history of overcoming the odds over the past three-quarters of a century".

According to the ONCE, Herman Van Rompuy "was already aware of the work done by our organisation, and of our commitment to the136,000 workers involved with the ONCE and its Foundation, of whom 115,000 are disabled". Carballeda invited the European leader to Spain in order to visit and learn more about the work of the ONCE and its Foundation "as an example of our social dimension".

Carballeda said "the response has been very positive and we were able to share our experiences and, above all, this means that new channels and future ideas for projects to help disabled people will be taken seriously, enabling us to make the very most of them".
