University of Washington School of Social Work to Hold Teach-In Open to the Public

Seattle, WA (I-Newswire) January 12, 2012 - The School of Social Work at University of Washington will be hosting “A Day of Learning and Action: The 99% Arise” a teach-in next Thursday, the 19th, that is open to the public. Students, staff, and faculty will bring together knowledge, practice, and activism with a half day teach-in exploring the roots of in-the-streets social work, civil rights actions, and labor organizing. Graduate student, Virginia Eader, is on the organizing committee of Thursday’s teach-in: “We talk about working for social and economic justice in class and this is going to give students a practical understanding of what advocacy, activism, and practice, really look like. I am excited about the opportunity to be able to learn from such a dynamic cross-section of Seattle’s active community.”

The teach-in will run from 12:00 to 6:00 PM and will include multi-media, art, discussions, and panels on everything from the inequity of the economic engine and the historical roots of radical social work to legislative advocacy and the experiences of Seattle’s activists and occupiers from the 1970s through today. Panelists include John Burbank, Executive Director of the Economic Opportunity Institute; Nancy Amidei, Director of the Civic Engagement Project; Bob Santos, activist and author; Lynne Dodson, Washington State Labor Council Secretary-Treasurer; James Gregory, Endowed Chair in UW’s History Department and author; and Sarah van Gelder, Executive Editor of Yes! Magazine. There is no charge to participate in the teach-in, which is open to the public. “I feel like the catalyst for something amazing has surfaced, and hope this teach-in will give me the tools I need to bring my passion out of the classroom and into action,” commented David Delgado, graduate student.
