New Counseling Skills Course offered online by the College of Mental Health Counseling

The College is pleased to announce a new online counseling skills course as a gateway opportunity for members of the public to offer counseling services for people seeking help.

(I-Newswire) October 23, 2009 - The new online distance education course entitled “Effective Counseling Skills” is designed especially for people who have not taken a class or attended school for many years. The course prepares students for College membership with the benefits of continuing education and assistance to offer professional counseling services.

In addition to acquiring knowledge and skills in the process of counseling, the course will increase the student’s self-awareness essential to becoming an effective counselor.

Topics covered in the course include: completing and understanding the Clinical Assessment, steps for suicide prevention, and skills to begin, deepen, and close the counseling session and the over-all counseling process. The participants will also learn skills to heal grief resulting from different types of loss: death of a loved one, breakup of a relationship, divorce, loss of health, bankruptcy, and others. Also included are skills for healthy communication, reducing hostility, solving problems, resolving conflicts, listening with empathy, and speaking assertively as well as approaches to helping couples resolve specific issues: infidelity, household duties, addiction, and others.
