New Clubhouse Gives Cricketers Plenty To Sing About.

Ham & Petersham CC celebrates building its new clubhouse with a song written and recorded by its members.

Kingston, Surrey (I-Newswire) December 11, 2012 - Players from Ham & Petersham Cricket Club have recorded a new song to mark the start of building works of the team’s new clubhouse.

Ham & Petersham cricketer Mike Greenway, who is also the keyboard player in the club’s band, The Ham Stars, said the club had been tirelessly fundraising all year for a new clubhouse, highlighted by a fundraising match involving Australian bowling legend Shane Warne earlier in June.

Mr Greenway said the new single, ‘Play the game’, can be purchased on iTunes and was deliberately timed to coincide with the start of building works prior to Christmas.

“Ham & Petersham is a very musical cricket club so releasing our first single (‘Play the game’) seemed like the perfect way to celebrate the building of our new clubhouse,” Mike Greenway said. He also joked that his band’s single could be a surprise number one hit this Christmas.

But when quizzed on whether he thought it could replicate the heights of 10cc’s cricket-themed reggae hit – ‘Dreadlock Holiday’ – which topped the UK charts in 1978, Mr Greenway replied with a ‘straight bat’.

“It’d sure be nice if it did because we’re still looking to raise more funds for the club,” Mr Greenway said.

“But equally, I’d be just as happy if it succeeded in getting a few new faces down to preseason training next January.
“This is a great club, which caters for players of all ages and levels of ability.

“Next year marks our 198th year and will be the first year of playing premiership cricket, so it’s really exciting to know that when it comes to the day when we’ll be cracking open the bubbly and toasting the club’s ‘double-century’, we’ll be doing so from a brand new clubhouse.

The building works are expected to start before Christmas at the site of the existing clubhouse, which is located opposite Ham Common.

Pre-season winter net training starts on 7 January from at 7-9pm at Greycourt School – no musical ability required.
