NCEBC Supports Life-long Learning with a Special Introduction of “MegaSkills”

Indianapolis (I-Newswire) August 12, 2011 - INDIANAPOLIS, IN – On Saturday, August 13, 2011, the NCEBC will host a Back-to-School Event for parents and caregivers whose children participated in the inaugural NCEBC Summer School Program, offered in partnership with MSD of Lawrence Township and the Indiana Department of Education with the support of the 21st Century Community Learning Center program sponsored by the US Department of Education.

NCEBC supports life-long learning through its various national programs including the National Literacy Initiative, Parent University Curriculum, and multiple mentoring programs. The introduction of core-components of the nationally renowned MegaSkills program developed by the National Home and School Institute (HSI) promotes the NCEBC mission to not only involve parents as key stakeholders to education, but also empower them, regardless of their own academic and social affluence.

According to the featured presenter, Mrs. Alexis J. Smith (an NCEBC staff member and HSI Certified Parent Leader), “Parents who care about the achievement of their child’s dreams and unique potential are already equipped with the skills to help them succeed. MegaSkillsTM workshops simply draw the connection between at-home development of confidence, problem-solving, initiative, responsibility, and other measured academic, social, athletic and even entrepreneurial achievement.”

During this event at the Benjamin Harris YMCA, 5736 Lee Road, Indianapolis, IN, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, parents and caregivers of elementary school children will also be presented with a “healthy cooking and eating” demonstration over an on-site lunch with local NCEBC supporter, Chef Hollis Thomas, as part of the developing NCEBC “Local Leaders” initiative.

Rounding out the event, NCEBC will be inviting participating caregivers to (re)enroll their students in the second year of after-school programming with the 2011-2012 NCEBC Literacy Center Extended School Day Program now available at six MSD of Lawrence Township locations. School supplies will be provided to participating students and caregivers in attendance will be included in an on-site community-sponsored raffle.
