Musician And Mixed-Media Artist, Joe DeVita Lauches Netlabel

Musician and mixed-media experimenter, Joe DeVita launches Abducted Mind Records.

It is a mute point that the proliferation of individuals who rely on the internet for information and entertainment has greatly effected the music industry. Filesharing and choose your price payment options have done much to change the landscape in which artists and industry professionals operate.

With all of these paradigm shifts occuring, independent musicians are learning very quickly that if they would like to enjoy success at something they are passionate about, they need to bone up on their business skills. As a result, many artists have begun to take control of their own art and how it is distributed.

There was once a time in which artists needed to submit demos to record companies in hopes of getting their "foot in the door". It seemed to many (and still does to some) that attaning a record deal was a golden ticket to freedom. An opportunity that allowed the artist to focus on their craft. Despite this belief we have seen a large influx of artists who have managed to develop a successful career independent of the music industry juggernaut. Most notably - Ani DiFranco, Dave Matthews, Phish, The Grateful Dead, Fugazi (to name a few). These artists took a grass roots approach to their business and for the most part, managed to keep the most important aspect of what they provide in sight. The music.

In the spirit of the independent artists from bygone days, Joe DeVita has spent the past two years hitchiking throughout the United States and performing before whoever would take the time to listen. From bar gig to pow wow, Joe DeVita has traveled the length and bredth of the United States with the firm belief that hard work does indeed pay off.

In May 2011, Joe went on hiatus from public performance to focus on writing and recording new music. Recording some fifty songs over a six month period, Joe began looking for ways to spread his music all over the world. "I had actually considered shopping a demo to labels but I know that wasn't the route for me. Looking at the industry realistically, I know I certainly do not belong. I'm not going to be on MTV or Late Night with whoever. I don't really mind that because I know that I can still reach people on terms that I and fans of my music feel comfortable with. I always had the idea of launching my own label. When I had thought about it intitally, I hadn't acquired the finances in order to do so. When I found out about netlabels, I realized that I could put out the music that I wanted and let people decide for themselves if they would like to contribute to my cause financially. As cold of a medium as the internet can be, I really like that I can be personable with someone 20,000 miles away. I don't need to put on some false image. I get to be a real person. I need that".

Joe's netlabel Abducted Mind Records went public earlier today, immediately offering a free downaload of an Acoustic Set performed by Joe. "There is so much to do and I'm going to be learning alot as I go. The one thing I can promise is that people will be getting a diverse body of music from me. In my opinion, it is all good quality and my personality is all over it. I drew up a logo and it looks totally Punk Rock (laughs). It's sincere. It may not be Lady GaGa or whoever but it's me.
