most aggressive form of breast cancer related to most profound deficiencies of vitamin D

(I-Newswire) July 5, 2009 - A research group co-funded by Whittier medical oncologist, Dr. Glenn Tisman, and some of his generous patients launched a study with profound results for breast cancer patients. The study revealed that most breast cancer patients lack adequate blood levels of vitamin D, and those with the lowest levels of vitamin D had the often lethal form of breast cancer known as triple-negative breast cancer. The group's findings are to publish in the peer-reviewed journal "Cases Journal" this year.

The research group was comprised of Dr. Tisman and two recent Whittier College graduates. Both Christa Rainville and Yasir Khan majored in pre-medicine.
Each student took leadership roles in researching and authoring this study under the tutelage of Dr. Tisman. The findings advance our understanding of nutrition and its relationship to breast cancer.

The local research group has started a campaign to assure that those at the greatest risk for breast cancer and those already suffering from the disease undergo blood testing for vitamin D status. If blood levels are low, patients are encouraged to supplement their intake of vitamin D.

Other groups have published work confirming the groups concern that the incidence of all forms of breast cancer and the overall survival of patients with breast cancer is shortened in those with low blood levels of vitamin D.
