Molecule Driving Longevity Linked to Caloric Restriction, Say Researchers

Experts believe overeating causes brain aging and decline, while eating less may help our brain stay young.

Italian researchers at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome recently reported that a molecule called CREB1, which is activated by sharply lower caloric intake, goes on to activate genes linked to longevity and proper brain functioning.

Many previous studies suggest that overeating and obesity are bad for the brain-causing early brain cell aging, slowing it down, and making it susceptible to diseases typical of older people like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Other studies have linked caloric restriction to longevity along with other favorable health markers. However, the mechanism behind these effects was unknown.

"A plausible conclusion could be that overeating causes brain aging and decline, while eating less may help our brain stay young," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH).
"As usual, however, the researchers commented that this discovery will hopefully lead to the creation of a new drug that would activate CREB1 and provide the benefits of caloric restriction without the need for strict dieting."

"The key to caloric restriction and enlightened fasting and triggering these benefits is maximizing nutrition while minimizing concentrated carbohydrates and calories," adds Tom. "We have found that a diet built around the kind of foods we are naturally adapted to eat brings about all the same beneficial results without strict dieting or drugs. In fact, positive physiological change can happen with absolutely no efforts aimed at caloric restriction. It appears that proper dietary choices, along with other proper lifestyle choices, are all that is required to avoid chronic disease and experience optimal health."
