Still Time to Register For 4th Annual 10K/5K Run/Walk, Funds Raise Awareness For Teen & Youth Obesity

Palo Alto, CA (I-Newswire) October 26, 2010 - PALO ALTO, CA – Palo Alto Family YMCA announced today that registration is still open for its 4th annual Marsh Madness 10k/5k run/walk, taking place Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Palo Alto Baylands.

The health and fitness event, co-sponsored by Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, raises funds and promotes community awareness to fight an increasing number of health problems in youth, including poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, obesity, and adult-onset diabetes. The event is part of the Palo Alto Grand Prix Series.

“Marsh Madness has a direct impact on teens and youth in our community,” said Scott Glissmeyer, Executive Director at the Y. “All the money raised from the event goes to Y programs that encourage healthier lifestyles, so everyone, from our volunteers to our sponsors and participants, can feel good knowing they have helped us in our effort to raise awareness about youth obesity.”

One hundred percent of funds from the event will support a variety of Y youth initiatives such as Activate Youth—supporting elementary school students with healthy lifestyles—and Noon Time Sports at local elementary schools.

The event kicks off at 10 a.m., with the 5K segment starting at 10:20 a.m. and the 10K segment beginning at 10:25 a.m. After the walk and run, participants can stay for the post-race expo for free food, live music and awards. The entry fee is $35 for adults and $10 for ages 17 and under. Y members receive a $5 discount. Marsh Madness is a professionally timed event on a USA Track and Field certified course.

“This is a terrific venue for people who want to run a well-organized race,” said Dana De Nault, a Y member who previously has participated in the event. “Families who are looking for a great weekend activity with plenty of exercise, music and great food will find this to be a lot of fun.”

Major sponsors for Marsh Madness include Stanford Hospital & Clinics, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Fleet Fleet Sports, Wahoo Tacos, Firehouse Brewery, Calafia Café, Fraiche Organic Yogurt, TIBCO, Eternal Timing and Fraternal Order of Eagles.
