Long Point Oyster Growers Deliver Oysters To Severn River

Long Point Oyster Growers volunteers delivered oysters to an artifical reef in the Severn River on Saturday. Growers have cared for oysters for the past year as part of the Severn River Association & Maryland Department of Natural Resources Program.

(I-Newswire) August 1, 2010 - Long Point Oyster Growers co-ordinator Tom Lengle reported the successful transfer of oysters grown by Long Point volunteers have been moved to the Severn River oyster sanctuary designated by the MD DNR.

"Six volunteers were responsible for the quick deliver of oysters from docks to sanctuary", Lengle stated. At 9 AM on Saturday volunteers departed Lengle's dock on the "Jay Bird", a classic 1977 PENN YAN, to collect oysters from cages hung under community docks and peers.

Lengle went on to say, "I would like to thank the following volunteers from the Cub Scout Pack 77, sponsored by the American Legion Post #7 in Annapolis. They include Webelos scouts Richard Burke and Kent Hardart from Indian Creek School and Den Leader, Audrey Burke and Committee Member, Tim Burke."

"I can't forget Tom McCollum, and my wife Ronnie for their hard work." he added. "They were instrumental in developing the logistics and plans for the operation".

The Long Point Oyster Growers are committed to oyster restoration as a means to help clean the waters of the Severn River and the Chesapeake Bay. "Everyone should be proud of their efforts as we found many shells loaded with viable oysters!!! Some shells had as many as 5 or 6 oysters."

"Since an oyster can reproduce in its first year of life, Long Point Oysters transferred to the artificial reef should be able to multiply quickly. Oysters are extremely fertile." Lengle added.

Marylanders Grow Oysters is managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources in conjunction with the Oyster Recovery Partnership, the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, and local organizations inclduing the Severn River Association.
