Loma Linda Study Adds to Evidence That Vegetarians Tend to Outlive Meat-Eaters

Overall an average 12 percent lower risk of dying over study period compared to frequent meat consumers.

A recent study by researchers at Loma Linda University, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, examined the diets of 73,308 members of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, which recommends a plant-based diet. Among the 2,570 participants who died within about six years of the initial data collection, the majority were meat eaters. Vegetarians were classified into several subgroups, but overall they had an average 12 percent lower risk of dying over the study period compared to frequent meat consumers.

"The 'winners' in terms of extending lifespan were the pesco-vegetarians, who ate fish 'but rarely meat' and had a 19 percent lower death rate," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH).

"Vegan and other semi-vegetarian diets are healthy, and strict to not-so-strict application seems to be healthier than a diet dominated by processed foods and meats," addsTom. "Compared to the common unhealthy American diet, the Adventist guidelines of limiting sugars, sugary drinks, refined grains, and large amounts of saturated and trans fats, focusing instead on eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts, is a much more important consideration than whether to include moderate amounts of dairy, eggs, fish, or meat."

"It should be noted that the 'vegetarians' tended to be older, more educated, less likely to drink alcohol or smoke tobacco, exercised more and were leaner as well," said Tom.
