Highlands Oncology Group Supports Awareness For Cancer Control in April
This month is the National Cancer Control Month, and as such Highlands Oncology Group (HOG), Northwest Arkansas' premier cancer treatment facility, supports and encourages awareness for cancer control throughout the month and the year.
1,665,540 people will be diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. in 2014, the American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates. However, much of the suffering and death from cancer could be prevented by more systematic efforts to reduce tobacco use, improve diet and physical activity, and expand the use of established screening tests, according to the ACS.
Many peoples risk of developing cancer can be greatly reduced by maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, limiting alcohol intake and sun exposure, and living tobacco-free, according to a proclamation released by the White House.
In 2013 about 174,100 cancer deaths will be directly caused by tobacco use, according to ACS estimates. furthermore, approximately one-quarter to one-third of the 1,660,290 cancer cases expected to occur in 2013 can be attributed to poor nutrition, physical inactivity, overweight, and obesity, according to the ACS.
HOG encourages Northwest Arkansas residents to be aware of the prevention methods available and to take the necessary precautions in order to reduce their risk of developing a deadly and damaging disease.
