Online, August 20, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Livestock Water Recycling, Inc. (LWR) is thrilled to announce it has been awarded an Alberta Innovation Voucher in conjunction with the Olds College Centre for Innovation (OCCI). The purpose of the $50,000 voucher is to perform crop growing and composting trials with nutrient fertilizers produced by LWR's Manure Treatment System located at a dairy operation in New York State.
LWR's innovative system recycles clean water and valuable nutrients from livestock manure. The system is placed at dairy, hog, and anaerobic digester operations. Ross Thurston, President of LWR says, 'the ability to recover and concentrate nutrients from manure and apply them to crops will help close-loop operations. This provides a sustainable cycle of livestock production, nutrient recovery, and crop growth. The use of nutrients from manure can alleviate the potential costs associated with commercial fertilizers.'
Animal manures contain multiple essential crop nutrients and improve soil properties such as micronutrients and soil pH. Continued application of commercial fertilizers can lead to soil acidification and thus loses in productivity. LWR is developing this fertilizer with its technology to assist farmers in their job of feeding the growing population. It will enable operators to reuse the valuable nutrients already available at their operations.
Alberta Innovation Vouchers help small early-stage technology and knowledge- driven businesses in Alberta get their ideas and products to market faster. LWR has been awarded the maximum voucher value which is reserved for substantial technology development activities such as lab verification, field testing, and IP protection.
OCCI has previously partnered with LWR to study its treatment technology. The OCCI is the scientifically acclaimed applied research division of Olds College and actively pursues involvement in research that advances innovation-based rural economic development in Alberta.
The study will aid the development of LWR's technology and verify its ability to successfully produce nutrient rich fertilizers to be used for growing crops.
