Ledge and Braced Oak Doors
Ledge and braced oak doors are becoming increasingly popular, and it's not hard to see why.
Exeter, Devon (I-Newswire) January 25, 2013 - Ledge and braced oak doors are becoming increasingly popular, and it's not hard to see why. They look elegant and stylish, giving your house or business a homely feel, and welcoming everyone in. People have been using oak to craft their doors for centuries, so it is not a new concept. Also, oak is very cheap to come across as it grows well in a variety of climates and doesn't need much maintenance. It is not just the appearance of the door that appeals to people though.
Oak is a fantastic material from which to build doors, as it is incredibly sturdy. Although a door of this material will generally be more expensive than those made of a variety of veneers, it is certainly worth the extra cost. They are much stronger than other woods and veneers, and you don't need to put much thought into maintaining them. All that you will need to do is apply a little linseed oil on the surface of the doors. This needs to be done fairly regularly, but linseed oil is generally cheap and easy to come by. One downside of using oak is that the colour will fade over the years. However, bathing the door in lime will help to preserve it. Some people like the more rustic look that comes with the fading, so this is a pretty minor problem that you might face.
So what is a ledge and braced door? There are many different types of door out there for you to choose from, so why choose this one? This style of door is made of vertical tongue and grooved boards, which are held together with both diagonal braces and battens. The doors are attractive to the eye, and are also incredibly sturdy. Each of the planks are supported, meaning that they can take a higher level of pressure and wear and tear before they become damaged.
On top of all this, oak doors are far more environmentally friendly than veneers. They take less power and energy to make than veneer doors, and as such create less pollution. The wood can usually be locally sourced rather than components being ordered from overseas. Some even argue that they are healthier to have around the house as they are all natural rather than majorly chemically enhanced.
So if you are looking to purchase a door for your home or office and can't choose which, take a chance on a ledge and braced oak door. You won't regret it.
