Le Moyne College Connects Campus and Community Artist Group

Syracuse (I-Newswire) August 27, 2011 - Scholarship is in action again this year as Le Moyne College collaborates with a local artist group, The Underground Poets, to bring a spoken-word play to the private campus. The Underground Poets, a 12 member group of local spoken-word artists, will draw city audiences into Le Moyne to celebrate their two-year anniversary through a spoken-word play called Flight 157 on September 1.

“Building relationships around the Syracuse community is what the Underground Poetry Spot is about,” said Seneca T. Wilson, founder of the group. The group sees this as an opportunity to disarm students and local writers from the stigmas of working together to produce engaging literature.

“Collaborations with not only Syracuse University but Le Moyne College will open up many opportunities for the city to grow with poetry,” said founder Seneca Wilson.

Le Moyne College is providing the venue through two student organizations sponsoring the event. Brothers of a new Direction (B.O.N.D) and Pride in Our Work, Ethnicity and Race (P.O.W.E.R.) are the student organizations extending a hand to showcase the connection between community poets stories and those of the students the colleges service. The performance is $10 for the general public and free for Le Moyne's students entering with student id’s.

“Poetry is must needed in our community, and we would like to thank Le Moyne College for helping us keep this poetry movement moving,” said Wilson. The group performs locally, regionally, and hosts national artists monthly at The Underground Poetry Spot located on Erie Blvd. Though their venue may change this year the group will continue to offer free workshops to area writers and city school students through a satellite location. The proceed from this play support their free workshops and literature projects for young and adult writers in the Syracuse.
