Patient safety education and advocacy group PULSE of NY announces a major seminar on diagnostic errors in healthcare. The event will gather national leaders in the field. It will take place March 3 in Plainview, NY. Registration link included.
Online, February 27, 2014 (Newswire.com) - Time is running out to register for Long Island's first patient safety seminar on diagnostic error and patient engagement. Hosted by PULSE of NY, a New York patient safety organization, the event will be held at the Holiday Inn in Plainview, NY on March 3, 2014, and will focus on efforts to improve diagnosis outcomes.
Diagnostic error is the leading cause of medical malpractice claims in the US, and is estimated to cause 40,000-80,000 deaths annually. One in every ten diagnoses is wrong, according to the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine.
The conference, titled 'Medical Diagnosis: Help Your Doctor Help You; Patients Involved in Healthcare The Role of Patient Engagement in Error Prevention', coincides with Patient Safety Awareness Week, which aims to encourage patient and family participation in reducing misdiagnosis by improving communication and sharing information.
"PULSE of NY has been educating the public about patient safety practices since 1996," says Ilene Corina, President and founder of the grassroots organization. "Now we hope members of the public will hear from national leaders on the subject, and change their behavior to avoid misdiagnosis."

Jack Rubenstein MD, FACP, Medical Director of the Clinical Reasoning Consultation Program, and Associate Professor of Medicine at the Hofstra North Shore LIJ School of Medicine. He is also a founding member of the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine.
Ronald M. Wyatt, MD, medical director in the Division of Healthcare Improvement at The Joint Commission.
