Largest Data Centre Provider In The Netherlands Global Switch Expands Data Centre

The world leading data centre solutions operator Global Switch is to expand its Amsterdam Center this year.

Amsterdam (I-Newswire) February 1, 2013 - Global Switch, the top operator and owner of wholesale data centre solutions space in the Asia-Pacific and European region, will expand its current Amsterdam data centre, which is presently the biggest Dutch carrier neutral multi-tenant data centre. The expansion will take place in stages, generally in between 2MW to 4MW of IT power, backed by a common system which will accommodate highly flexible, scalable and fast implementation to cater to client's customized specifications.

Phase 1 of the scheduled 25,400 sq m total space expansion has been pre-let to a major worldwide telecom services company. The development of this first Stage is expected to start in the next weeks, becoming operational in Q1 of 2014. The layout features an typical power density of 1,500 watts per sq m with overall flexibility to provide much greater densities as needed. As soon as all the scheduled Stages of the €240 million expansion have been concluded, the Global Switch Amsterdam data centre will offer 64,000 sq m of space and have 100 MW of on location power generating capacity from two different 50kV high voltage feeders straight from the country's grid. The expanded data centre has a targeted PUE of 1.25.

The expansion will profit from the system dense environment that the current data centre campus currently offers with a variety of international and local providers. The campus also benefits from the current link to the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), one of the biggest internet exchanges globally. AMS-IX is located in Global Switch's data centre ensuring outstanding dependability and high speed connections within the Netherlands and around the world. Global Switch is dedicated to decreasing the effect of its data centres on the natural environment as well as fighting increasing energy expenses and has been acquiring 100% green power since 2008. In this respect Global Switch Amsterdam has accomplished ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and the new expansion will be included in this. The campus is also certified ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 27001 (Information Security Management) and ISAE 3402 (Assurance Reports on Controls at Service Organisations) and will obtain ISO 18001 (Occupational Health & Safety Management) later this current year.

When finished the expansion will profit from a selection of energy saving projects from free air cooling to reconfigurable power and cooling. The Amsterdam expansion will aim for a BREEAM Very Good Rating. These energy saving endeavours combined with the size of the data centre, will provide larger on-going advantages to clients compared to smaller sized data centres. John Corcoran, Global Switch's Executive Chairman commented: "The expansion of our Amsterdam data centre is a direct response to our customers' needs for additional highly resilient technical space and power. Amsterdam is an appealing location for many of our customers, with the Netherlands being considered the gateway into Europe due to its central location and accessibility. Owning the ground lease of our Amsterdam data centre and the site around it, gives us complete flexibility to grow as our customers expand, and we are able to work closely with them to deliver bespoke cost effective solutions."

Johan Groeneweg, Global Switch's Managing Director in Amsterdam said "Global Switch is the largest wholesale carrier neutral data centre provider in the Netherlands. Our scale, highly resilient environment and rich connectivity is highly attractive to customers and we are delighted that Phase 1 of our extension has already been pre-let."
