Lack of management solutions creates hurdle to Cloud Computing, say UK and US CIOs

Survey reveals 74% of organizations will use Cloud but just 27% have a solution in place to manage it; Zeus Cloud Traffic Manager will address CIO concerns

(I-Newswire) October 20, 2009 - San Mateo, Calif. – October 20, 2009 – Zeus Technology, the only pure software-based application traffic management company, today announces the results of a survey of Chief Information Officers (CIOs), IT Directors and Senior IT Managers at large organizations on adoption levels and attitudes towards Cloud Computing. The study reveals that nearly 75 per cent already use or plan to use Cloud Computing, but just 27 per cent have a solution in place to manage it.

The survey found that, while adoption is increasing, CIOs are concerned about how to manage and control applications and resources in Cloud environments. More than half worry about a lack of cost control (57 per cent) and more than a third (35 per cent) fret over scalability. But the biggest concern is being locked-in to one vendor for Cloud services, according to 63 per cent of organizations. The results show a need for more sophisticated tools to monitor and control Cloud usage and the movement of applications from Cloud to Cloud. Over half of enterprises surveyed (53 per cent) also say introducing government standards and legislation to control Clouds would boost adoption rates.

When the results are broken down by region, the biggest concern among US CIOs is cost control (66 per cent), followed closely by vendor lock-in (60 per cent). UK CIOs also worry about vendor lock-in, ranking it as their number one concern at 65 per cent. In regard to the issue of vendor lock-in, approximately three-quarters of respondents in both the financial services (78 per cent combined) and manufacturing (72 per cent combined) industries site it as their primary concern.

This research supports the Zeus vision and validates today’s announcement that Zeus will release the Zeus Cloud Traffic Manager in early 2010, as part of a new enterprise traffic management platform. The Zeus Cloud Traffic Manager will work in all Clouds avoiding vendor lock-in and enabling organizations to monitor Cloud usage and manage application traffic in the Cloud.

The major release of Zeus Traffic Manager, version 6.0, launches today, making it easier for organizations to manage web traffic in alignment with business requirements. This will provide massive yet cost-effective scalability and deliver unrivalled power and sophistication for enterprise and web 2.0 applications.

William Fellows, Principal Analyst, The 451 Group, comments on the release, “Organizations are keen to embrace Cloud Computing and enjoy the benefits the technology can deliver but have concerns over how they can manage their IT environments. The Zeus Cloud Traffic Manager will help enterprises address these concerns by providing valuable insight into how much cloud resource is being used in real-time. This insight is crucial if businesses are to effectively manage Cloud traffic and control costs. Zeus understands the market shift into the Cloud, providing the technology that will enable organisations to see its full potential and make the Cloud a reality in the future.”

Paul Brennan, CEO, Zeus Technology says, “We have listened to our customers and partners and this new product will address their top concerns directly. As business users come to expect more dynamic web applications and services in the Cloud, traffic management will grow in importance. It’s not just about making money out of the Cloud, it’s about making it robust, scalable and usable, so organizations can see its potential and begin to use it.”
