Keeping Safe And Secure These Holidays Starts With The Christmas Shopping

The majority of shoppers continue to provide a temptation for thieves by leaving their Christmas shopping in their car, new research from NRMA Insurance has revealed.

The research comes as NRMA Car Insurance,NSW Police Force and the NSW Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) remind NSW residents about home and road safety as we move toward Christmas.

According to NRMA Car Insurance Community and Sustainability Manager Megan Lupton, parked cars can quickly turn into crime scenes and ruin your holidays before they have even begun.

'Our research shows over 60 percent of shoppers leave Christmas shopping in their car, providing soft targets for thieves and potential heart ache at Christmas time*, said Ms Lupton

NSW Police Force's Crime Prevention spokesperson, Detective Superintendent Helen Begg, said
NSW residents need to be extra vigilant about security in the lead up to Christmas.

'Leaving your Christmas shopping in full view in your cars provides an irresistible temptation to thieves. It doesn't matter how busy a street or car park might seem, crooks can gain access to your car within seconds and make off with the gifts you bought for your loved ones, ' Detective Superintendent Begg said.

'You need to be just as careful when you get your presents home too,' she warned. 'Make sure your
Christmas tree with presents beneath can't be seen from the street and if you're keen to pack your car the night before your morning holiday drive, we encourage you to reconsider and pack just before your drive.'

As many NSW residents prepare to load up their cars and hit the road for the Christmas break,
Commissioner of the NSW VRA, Russell Ashdown is urging all NSW drivers travelling long distances to think about their family's safety and to stop for regular breaks.

'If you're spending Christmas away from home, take your time getting there and break up the trip with rests along the way,' said Commissioner Ashdown.
