KBE Building Corporation Wins Award Of Merit For AFRC
KBE Building Corporation (KBE)has won a 2012 Connecticut Green Building Award of Merit from The U.S. Green Building Council, Connecticut Chapter (CTGBC) for its Armed Forces Reserve Center in Middletown, Connecticut.
Online, August 31, 2012 (Newswire.com) - KBE Building Corporation (KBE) (www.kbebuilding.com) has won a 2012 Connecticut Green Building Award of Merit from The U.S. Green Building Council, Connecticut Chapter (CTGBC) for its Armed Forces Reserve Center in Middletown, Connecticut.
The Connecticut Green Building Council (CTGBC) is a chapter of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The CTGBC is a non-profit organization that was created to promote the use of energy efficiency in high performance construction by holding workshops, networking opportunities, membership meetings, educational forums, seminars, and LEED training.
The $54 million, 203,000 square-foot Armed Forces Reserve Center encompasses a state-of-the-art training center, a vehicle maintenance facility, and a field equipment storage facility for the Connecticut National Guard and Army Reserve. In a joint venture with DeRita Construction, KBE Building Corporation was the Design-Builder, with Kleinfelder as the Architect of Record. The fast-tracked construction phase was completed in just 16 months, even with permit delays and the removal of nearly 500,000 cubic yards of soil and rock from the site. The new Reserve Center features numerous "green" building measures, including a "green" roof, photovoltaic arrays, and high-efficiency heating and cooling systems.

The AFRC project is LEED Gold certifiable by US Army Corps of Engineers' standards, which are comparable to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) standards. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, was developed by the USGBC in 2000 and provides verification that a building was designed and built using aspects of efficient environmental health conservation strategies. The certification, which is divided into three categories (Silver, Gold, and Platinum), recognizes performance in areas including: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.
Previously, the Armed Forces Reserve Center project won Best in Show from Connecticut's Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc., as well as the 2012 Engineering Excellence Grand Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies and a First Place Award at the 2012 Connecticut Building Congress (CBC) 16th Annual Project Team Awards Banquet.
