KBE Building Corp. Improves Ranking on Engineering News-Record's 2014 Top Contractors List

$300 million commercial construction firm has a history of awards, honors

KBE Building Corporation, a $300 million construction firm regionally positioned in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, earned spot #281 on Engineering News-Record's (ENR) 2014 Top 400 Contractors list, improving 45 spots compared to its 2013 ranking.

Published annually in May, ENR's Top 400 Contractors list provides structure to the construction industry by ranking publicly held and privately held contractors based on construction contracting-specific revenue.

"We're proud that KBE has landed on ENR's list yet again -- and with an improved ranking compared to last year," said KBE owner and CEO Mike Kolakowski, who bought the firm in 2007 with long-time senior executives Eric Brown and Simon Etzel.

"The construction industry has been bouncing back, and for KBE, that means building more K-12 schools, higher education facilities, and state-of-the-art senior living facilities, in addition to new retail locations."

KBE's ENR recognition is just one of the firm's 2014 honors; in January, KBE won six awards from CT ABC (Associated Builders and Contractors - Connecticut Chapter), including its most prestigious award, the Merit Cup. KBE's Director of Preconstruction Kenneth Russo was recently awarded the CCSU Construction Industry Award.

KBE has also won STEP (Safety Training and Evaluation Process) Awards of Achievement every year since 1995.

"At KBE, we've received quite a few awards over the years," said Kolakowski. "But one of the biggest rewards we get as a firm is helping our community through our charitable giving program, 50 Ways to Make a Difference."

Established in 2009 to celebrate the firm's new ownership, name change, and 50 years in business, 50 Ways has helped KBE associates donate more than $1.2 million and 5,000 volunteer hours to charitable causes in Connecticut and Maryland.
