KBE Building Corporation has completed construction for a $14.5 million, 57,000 square-foot commissary in Groton, Connecticut. The Farmington-based company served as general contractor for the on-budget project, which was ready two months ahead of schedule.

Located on Crystal Lake Road in Groton, Connecticut, The New London (Groton) Commissary provides twelve aisles' worth of groceries sold to military families at cost plus 5%. The facility includes a general sales area, electronic checkout registers, loading dock and receiving area, meat and produce preparation areas, cold and freezer storage, and other support areas.

KBE is proud that the Groton Commissary will help military members and their families save more than thirty percent compared to groceries sold at commercial supermarkets.

"KBE has completed many projects within the government sector - at the municipal, state, and national levels. But the Groton Commissary is a special point of pride for us, because it benefits our nation's heroes and their families," said President and principal owner Mike Kolakowski.

KBE not only builds to benefit active and retired military personnel. The company also helps through volunteer work and charitable giving. Military members, veterans, and their families were the target beneficiaries of KBE's annual 50 Ways to Make a Difference program in 2013.

"Our commitment to active and veteran military members and their families is ongoing. We strive not just to build for them, but also to serve them with our volunteer time and charitable donations," said Kolakowski.

The Groton store is just one of KBE's commissary projects; the company's Columbia, Maryland office is constructing the $27 million, 51,000 square-foot expansion of the Joint Commissary and Navy Exchange in Annapolis, Maryland set to be completed in late 2014.
