Kamu Lodge Celebrates Tenth Anniversary With A Special Treat For Guests

The eco-friendly Kamu Lodge in the jungle of Laos marks its 10 Year Anniversary this May with a special treat for all travellers.

It's hard to believe that 10 years have passed since Kamu Lodge's first tents were 'pitched' in the jungle of landlocked Laos. While the lodges have evolved in that time, with more comfortable baths and a limited supply of solar power, the Lodge has remained true to its original, deliberately rustic, 'off the grid' appeal. At the time, the Lodge has made great strides with its core mission — an exquisite balancing act between tourism and the maintenance of traditional life and values in neighboring Khmu Village.

When the Lodge opened in 2004, there were only 185 inhabitants in this village. Their income was extremely low, and none of the children attended school. Thanks to regular donations made by guests and other financial contributions, Kamu Lodge built a primary school for the children and hired teachers from Luang Prabang.

The Lodge continues to maintain a delicate balance between tourism, culture and environment. Rubbish is recycled or returned to Luang Prabang. A traditional Lao filter system cleans wastewater daily and solar panels generate electricity for the tents. The Lodge has deliberately avoided the introduction of air conditioning, TVs and refrigerators, partly to maintain the lightest possible carbon footprint and partly because such amenities are distractions from the actual experience of the Lao jungle.

The Lodge maximizes usage of local products in its restaurant, such as fruit from local farms, fish harvested from the Mekong and pork raised by local farmers. Most of the rice and fresh vegetables and herbs are grown in the Lodge's fields.

When staying at Kamu Lodge, you'll have a chance to soak up peaceful scenery, take part in traditional activities such as rice planting, fishing, gold mining, and you'll become familiar with an authentic Laotian way-of-life as lived by the Khmu people.

This eco-friendly Lodge marks its 10 Year Anniversary this May with a special treat for all travellers: Stay at Kamu Lodge and enjoy a complimentary bottle of wine upon arrival!
